Why we picked it – It’s still February and we are only a week away from Valentine’s Day, so here is a different story of the discovery of love and freedom.
Synopsis – Etero has escaped the misogyny and oppression of her father and brother and is now a curmudgeonly owner of an austere grocery store. After a near-death experience while blackberry picking, she casts off her 40 years of restraint for a secret affair with her long-time delivery guy. Once the day has been well and truly seized (on the floor of the store cupboard), Etero must interact with friends and family while keeping her change of lifestyle remains hidden. A celebration of being the master of your own destiny, even when hampered by fear, self-loathing and even a belief that a decision made in the past shall forever stand.
The film – Personal narratives are intertwined with social commentary, using an intimate story as a vehicle to challenge ageism, misogyny, and societal prejudices. It is never too late to find fulfilment. A powerful central performance, with stunning cinematography vividly captures this Georgian village. Here is an interview with the director at Cannes last year.
