Why we picked it – A dream-like film where much is left unstated.
Synopsis – British aid worker Hana has been traumatised by unspoken experiences in Syria. She returns to Luxor in Egypt where she meets former lover, and archaeologist, Sultan (by chance or by design?) She wanders aimlessly through the city and visits the dig where Sultan is working. Ironically he advises her to stop living in the past and face the future.
The film – This is a reflective, unhurried film that gives the audience time to reflect while it is playing. It was shot on a very low budget in only 18 days. Subtexts and undercurrents thread through everyday conversations and the dialogue sounds improvised throughout. It is often said that the location is a character in a film and here the Egyptian ruins provide a timeless context.
