The Hermit of Treig

Why we picked it – this season’s Outside the City – another version of the contemplative life.

Trailer

Synopsis – Ken Smith, a spirited elderly hermit, has been living on his own for 40 years in one of the most remote parts of Scotland – it is a 27 mile walk each way to post a letter. He talks to the director as he deals with ill health, a declining memory, and questions whether he can live out his last years in the wilderness he calls home. Half way through filming, he had a stroke and was taken to hospital in Fort William. As one of his doctor’s perceptively observes: physically he would be better off staying in Fort William but mentally, his remote cabin is better for him.

The film – A slow, meditative film. Amazing scenery and a fascinating individual with a real connection to his natural environment and a strange back-story. Shot over several years, hand-held camera, MacKenzie interviewing and voice-overs by Ken Smith himself throughout.
